Is Solo Travel Lonely? The Honest Truth.
Is Solo Travel Lonely? The Honest Truth
Solo travel can feel scary—especially if you’ve never done it before. It’s completely normal to feel unsure about taking that first step.
But here’s the truth… solo travel doesn’t have to be lonely.
As cruise specialists with over 30 years of experience, we’ve helped countless customers take that leap—and we’re here to guide you every step of the way. In fact, cruising is one of the best ways to travel solo, whether you want time to yourself or the chance to meet like-minded people.
To give you a real, honest insight into solo cruising, we spoke to Michele, co-owner of Ocean World Travel, who has been cruising for over 30 years—and more recently, enjoying cruises solo.
Michele’s Experience of Solo Cruising
“I’ve been cruising for years—mostly with my two sons (one of whom I now have the pleasure of working with). But as they’ve grown up, I’ve found myself travelling more on my own.
At first, I’ll be honest… I did feel a little daunted.
I wondered what it would be like not having someone there to share those special moments with. But very quickly, that feeling changed. I realised how freeing it was to do exactly what I wanted to do—at my own pace—while still exploring incredible destinations.
Solo cruising has really helped me build confidence. It’s taught me to put myself first sometimes and to enjoy doing things simply because I want to do them.”
Do You Feel Lonely on a Solo Cruise?
“One of the biggest concerns people have is whether they’ll feel lonely—but in my experience, that really isn’t the case.
You’re only ever alone if you want to be.
I’ve met so many wonderful people while cruising solo—people I’d never have met otherwise. Whether it’s over dinner, on an excursion, or just chatting on deck, there are always opportunities to connect.”
Why Cruising Is Perfect for Solo Travellers
“It really helped me to start with a cruise line I already knew and trusted. Knowing my way around the ship and what to expect gave me that extra bit of confidence.
One of my personal favourites is Fred. Olsen. Their ships are smaller, which creates a more relaxed and friendly atmosphere. They really look after solo travellers—offering shared dining tables and dedicated solo meet-ups, so it’s easy to meet people if you want to.
That’s the beauty of solo cruising—you can be as social or as independent as you like.”
So… Is Solo Travel Lonely?
The honest answer?
No—solo travel isn’t lonely unless you want it to be.
It’s empowering, rewarding, and often completely changes the way you see travel. You gain confidence, independence, and the freedom to experience the world on your own terms.
